Second Opinions and MDT Reviews in China: The Practical Process
Decide which question needs another opinion
A second opinion is another clinician's assessment of the diagnosis or proposed management. A multidisciplinary team review brings relevant specialties together. They are not interchangeable, and neither is guaranteed to produce a different answer or a particular treatment.
Write the decision you are trying to make: clarifying a diagnosis, comparing treatment approaches or understanding whether additional assessment is needed. Ask the institution which type of review is appropriate and whether it requires an in-person consultation, new imaging or review of pathology material.
Assemble a usable record
Prepare original reports, relevant imaging files, pathology reports, a treatment timeline and current medicines. Include the original language documents alongside translations. Ask the institution about accepted formats and secure transfer; a scan of a report may not replace the original imaging or pathology material it needs.
Organise documents by date and identify missing records rather than filling gaps from memory. Keep your questions separate from the clinician's documented conclusions. The reviewer should be able to distinguish what is established, what is suspected and what you want clarified.
Confirm the review and its output
| Before accepting the service | Ask for |
|---|---|
| Review format | Remote record review, in-person visit or actual multidisciplinary meeting |
| Clinical responsibility | Institution and specialties involved; who signs the medical opinion |
| Required inputs | Records, translations, imaging or specimens and any additional assessment |
| Output | Written opinion, questions addressed and how clarification is handled |
| Charges | Hospital review fees and coordination services separately itemised |
PriumCare coordinates agreed administrative work; it does not issue a medical opinion. A coordination package price is not automatically the hospital's MDT fee or a guarantee that a team will accept the case. Confirm the current package scope and obtain a separate institutional quotation where required.
Use the opinion with your treating team
Share the written result with the clinician responsible for ongoing care. Ask about any disagreement, the evidence behind the options and whether additional tests are needed. Do not stop current treatment or delay urgent care solely to wait for an overseas opinion without discussing the timing with the treating team.
Questions patients ask
Does an MDT review always include every specialty?
No. The institution determines which specialties are relevant and available. Confirm the actual format instead of relying on the label.
Can a second opinion be based on records alone?
Sometimes, but the receiving clinician decides whether the information is sufficient or an examination is necessary.
Does a second opinion guarantee access to treatment?
No. Assessment, eligibility, institutional acceptance and scheduling are separate steps.
Is the coordination package the price of medical review?
Not automatically. Read the listed deliverables and obtain the hospital's own fee information. Do not combine two different fee boundaries.
