CIHA and JCI in China: How to Check Hospital Accreditation

CIHA and JCI assess hospitals against standards, but a logo does not establish clinical suitability. Check the institution, campus, programme, validity and your actual care pathway.

    In short

CIHA and JCI are hospital accreditation frameworks. Neither replaces the checks needed for your diagnosis, treating team or care plan. Verify a hospital's current status with the accrediting body rather than trusting an old logo or inferring quality from the absence of one.

CIHA's 2021 standards received external recognition from ISQua External Evaluation Association (IEEA) in February 2022. That is recognition of a set of standards, not automatic accreditation of every Chinese hospital. A hospital must undergo its own assessment.

    What JCI evaluates

Joint Commission International evaluates organisational systems for quality and patient safety, including care processes, medication management, infection prevention and staff qualifications. Accreditation involves an assessment against a defined programme. Check the current JCI directory, the exact organisation and covered site; a historic award or another campus's certificate is insufficient.

Accreditation is not the same as a medical institution's operating licence, a specialist's credentials or evidence that a particular procedure is appropriate for you. Do not describe a successful assessment as merely buying a badge, or infer an outcome promise from it.

    What CIHA means

The Shenzhen Hospital Accreditation Research Center (SHARC) developed China's International Hospital Accreditation Standards. SHARC states that it began using the recognised standards to assess tertiary hospitals in Shenzhen in 2023. Its 2026 transition notice distinguishes versions and renewal arrangements. Ask which version and accreditation period apply to the institution you are considering.

CIHA is not confined to mainland hospitals: Hong Kong's Hospital Authority reports using adapted CIHA standards when it resumed hospital accreditation in 2023–24. Neither a single institution's announcement nor the presence of a different standard proves a nationwide replacement of JCI.

    A patient checklist

    1. Verify the institution and clinician. Match the legal name, campus and relevant qualifications to the care being proposed. National hospital grade is useful context, not a substitute for this verification.
    2. Check the specialty and case fit. Ask who will review your records, what experience is relevant and which evidence informs the proposed plan. Rankings or case volume alone do not establish individual suitability.
    3. Confirm the international pathway. Ask about passport registration, interpreters, consent, written reports and follow-up. An international department does not automatically provide all services in your language.
    4. Check insurance and fees. Obtain written confirmation for your insurer, policy, department and proposed care, including any pre-authorisation. Accreditation does not establish direct billing or coverage.
    5. Verify the accreditation itself. Record the issuing body, programme, site, decision date and current validity. Ask the issuer about anything unclear rather than interpreting an old logo.

PriumCare can coordinate these questions and prepare records. It does not award accreditation, diagnose or promise a clinical outcome. A coordination plan and the hospital's medical decision remain separate.

    Frequently asked questions

Does a missing JCI logo mean a hospital is unsafe or that JCI was banned?

Neither conclusion follows from a missing logo. Check the current directory and ask the institution about its status. A claim about a nationwide ban or withdrawal trend requires separate evidence; do not infer it from selected hospitals.

Does IEEA recognition mean a hospital is CIHA-accredited?

No. Recognition of the standards and accreditation of an individual hospital are different assessments. Request the hospital's own certificate and verify its scope and current status with SHARC.

Is CIHA used in Hong Kong?

Yes. The Hospital Authority's quality and safety reporting describes using adapted CIHA standards in its hospital accreditation programme. This does not imply that every hospital in Hong Kong uses the same framework.

Which is better for choosing my hospital?

Do not rank your care solely by these acronyms. Current accreditation can support a choice, but the relevant clinician, specialty, treatment plan, language arrangements and confirmed costs still need to be assessed.

    Sources and editorial update

Editorial source check: 25 October 2026, not a clinical review. This update distinguishes standards from hospital certification and corrects the suggestion that CIHA is not used in Hong Kong. Unsupported claims about nationwide JCI withdrawal and a first-ever CIHA hospital in January 2026 are removed. Verify current status again before deciding.

    Next step

Ask about a records-based doctor and hospital review. Request the proposed scope, provider checks and separate fees in writing.
